Step 1: Know your size. Most people don't know their proper size. Whether you wear a size too small, or too large, it can make a drastic difference in appearance. To maintain a "sharp-dressed look," proper sizing is key. Many retail suit locations will size you for a suit free. Sizes fluctuate, a proper fit doesn't. By receiving a free fitting, you will receive many tips on what proper fitting is for you. From that point forward, you can focus on properly fitted clothes that you can buy anywhere (including discount outlets).

Step 2: Know your style. Your style is unique to you. It's an individualized expression and this is where finding clothes is a creative endeavor. Once you know your style, you can look for clothing that fits it and stay within that style to have your own unique expression come through in your daily interactions. In the work place, take a look at the enviroment you work in. Be sure to use the foundation that is presented by others and use ties, scarves, and other accessories to accentuate your style, yet maintaining a professional image.

Step 3: Know Your Color. Don't shy away from colors that look fabulous on you. Brilliant colors can accentuate classic pieces (which we will cover next). Hold up colors against your skin tone and ask for others to help you. You may be drawn to colors emotionally that are not a compliment to your natural tone. Once you have those basic colors down, take note, and stick to those colors in your wardrobe.

Step 4: Stick with the classics. Classics are powerful because they can be interchanged and stretch your wardrobe far beyond having to buy several pieces. Here are some standard classic pieces you can purchase and interchange:

For Women:

  • Dress Shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Turtle Necks
  • Knits (short and long sleeved).
  • Pants
  • Skirts
  • Jackets
  • Trench Coats
  • Scarves
  • Classic Accessories

When purchasing classic pieces, there are classic colors that can be interchanged. Most often black is what most everyone is drawn to, but black can be stark and intimidating. It's better to go a shade under black (such as a dark grey/charcoal) to maintain a professional and classic look without the rigidity of black. To cut back on having to buy several pieces, this can be done with staple pieces and interchanged throughout the work week so you always look on point without having to pack your closets with an expensive wardrobe. Trench coats are another staple piece. When purchasing coats, most often you can't go wrong with a trench coat in a basic and classic color.

For men:
  • Dress Shirts
  • Dress pants
  • Sweaters
  • Turtle necks
  • Classic color slacks
  • Suits
  • Ties
  • Hats
Men have it made. Their classics change only a smidgen and they usually know their style. Nice dress pants can be purchased that are machine washable. This is a great way to extend your wardrobe without breaking the bank. By purchasing machine washable pants, you avoid dry cleaning and can interchange your dress slacks with suits to expand your wardrobe. Flare can be added with ties, hats and sweaters. You can also interchange jackets with classic slacks without having to purchase a suit each time you need new clothes.

Step 5: Buy off season. Buying clothes off season enables you to expand your wardobe (many times) 3 to 1. In other words, you can purchase many items at deep discounts (75% off retail price). This triples your purchasing power.

Step 6: Shop thrift stores for classics. Classic pieces are great because they are often recycles at second hand stores. Many times you can purchase slightly worn pieces that look great. This can expand your wardrobe for pennies on the dollar. While you're there, take the pieces that you no longer wear and actively prune your wardrobe to create space and give to others. This practice simplifies your wardrobe and your life.

Step 7: Invest in high quality shoes. Strangely enough, people look at shoes and psychologically measure it in conjunction with success and attractiveness. However, high quality shoes are worth it. When you invest in a great pair of shoes, you are getting the proper support you need, an extension of wear, and versatility. Classic color shoes are charcoal, black, and brown. One pair of each can pretty much fit your entire wardrobe. To find out more about the importance of shoes and what to look for, Click here to find out more about investing in good shoes.
